Coastal Eye Associates Honors Local First Responder with Life-Changing LASIK Surgery

At Coastal Eye Associates, vision care is about more than helping patients see clearly, it’s about supporting the people who help keep our communities safe every day.
That’s what inspired the practice’s first LASIK Hero campaign, a community initiative designed to recognize local heroes through the gift of LASIK surgery.
This year’s recipient, Florentino “Tino” Martinez, has spent nearly two decades serving others as both a paramedic and police sergeant. After being nominated by members of the community, Tino was selected to receive complimentary LASIK surgery from Dr. Mohammad S. Yazdanie at Coastal Eye Associates.
For Tino, the recognition came as a complete surprise.
“I was immediately overwhelmed after receiving the phone call stating I was nominated and selected for this amazing opportunity,” he shared. “I’ve spent close to 20 years serving others as a paramedic and police officer, so being recognized in this way was truly an honor.”
Like many first responders, Tino often worked long hours in fast-paced and unpredictable environments while relying on glasses and contact lenses. Whether responding to emergency calls or serving in law enforcement situations, clear vision is critical.
After LASIK, he says everyday tasks, both professionally and personally, feel easier and more comfortable.
“I can now serve my community without worrying about glasses falling off or contacts getting in the way during emergency situations,” Martinez said.
According to Dr. Yazdanie, stories like Tino’s are exactly why the Coastal Eye Associates team wanted to launch this campaign.
“First responders like Tino spend their careers putting others first,” said Dr. Yazdanie. “Being able to improve his vision and support him in the work he does for the community is incredibly meaningful for our entire team.”
The LASIK Hero campaign invited community members to nominate individuals who consistently go above and beyond in service to others, including first responders, military members, health care workers and other local heroes.
Coastal Eye Associates hopes to continue the program in the future as another way to give back to the community beyond the exam room.
